Using Candles in Feng Shui Decorating

by on January 25, 2009

The basic belief behind Feng Shui is that there are five elements, some combinations of which create a productive cycle, and some a destructive cycle. When one of these five elements – water, wood, fire, earth, and metal, respectively for the productive cycle – are combined with an element adjacent to the main element, a productive cycle is perpetuated. The reason being that water sustains wood, wood feeds fire, ashes create earth, earth creates metal, and metal holds water. So if you have a room where wood is the main element, it would be good Feng Shui to add a water or fire element to the room, as water feeds wood and wood feeds fire. This is where candles would be a nice touch of good Feng Shui.

A look at the destructive cycle will show which elements do not work well together: water, fire, metal, wood, earth. And we can see that water puts our fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood clogs earth, and earth muddies water. Although these elements are generally considered bad Feng Shui combinations, one can be used with an adjacent element in the destructive cycle to minimize an overpowering element. For instance, if a room has overpowering metal elements, maybe filled with modern metal furniture, you can minimize that with wood elements like some green leafy plants, or with fire elements such as red throw pillows, a fireplace, or even candles.

It is beneficial to bear in mind the productive and destructive cycles while decorating, but for optimum Feng Shui, a room would have an equal balance of all five elements – none being too overpowering. If this isn’t the case and there is not one overpowering element, then the productive cycle is a good place to start when decorating.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the elements, we can see how to best utilize candles in our decorating. In areas with predominately metal or water elements – rooms which would have a lot of blue or silver colors or metallic furnishings – a candle would help minimize the overpowering colors and add balance. If you want to start using Feng Shui in a room with no overpowering elements, you could bring in a candle and a complimentary element like a plant or a brown oval rug since that color and shape are associated with the earth element.

Candles can be an easy way to bring a natural element into your home and can be a good starting place for implementing Feng Shui design. Not to mention that scented candles are often great Feng Shui because of the mood-enhancing qualities certain scents have. Candles provide a simple start in creating a pleasant ambiance and good decorating style.

Soy Candles Instead

Why Soy Candles Are Better!

By: Jessica Tracy

Most people, when buying scented candles just go to the nearest store and pick up some random cheap candle. This can be hazardous to you and your family’s health!

Candles you pick up at just any old store are most likely made with paraffin, a petroleum based product, and depending on where the candles were originally made, they co uld also be made with a lead wick. The making of lead wicks has been outlawed in the United States, but apparently the sale of them has not.

A much better, healthier alternative to these scented candles would be soy Candles!

There are many benefits to using soy candles:

•Soy candles burn approximately 50% longer

•they burn slower and at a lower temperature, which helps the fragrance distribute better

•Soy candles are nearly completely soot free

•They are non-toxic and made with no pesticides or herbicides which makes them safe for use around kids and pets

•Soy candles are made from soybeans grown in the USA which is a renewable re source and means that your purchase helps our economy!

•Soy candles are less likely to cause allergies

•They are biodegradable and clean up with soap and water.

After reviewing the many pros and cons of the different types of candles, it is easy to see why more and more people aer switching to Soy candles over Paraffin based acndles.

Now its your turn to decide…

Choosing the Right Candle Scent

How to Choose a Scented Candle

By: Lorraine Peltier

Do you love to burn scented candles? Chances are you are one of the
millions who do!

You know you can get candles at your local Dollar Store but you may want
to ask yourself if you would rather pay more for a candle and have some
guarantee of what exactly your candle is made of.

When you look for a candle, here are some qualities to consider:

Scent:

Do you like the scent? There are so many scents to choose from. Make
sure you find one you absolutely love!

Will the scent last to the bottom of the jar or will it dissipate after a couple
of burnings? A candle made with good - quality oils or perfumes whether
natural or synthetic will have scents that last from the top of the jar to the
last flicker of the candle.

Will the scent have ‘throw’? Meaning will the scent permeate the room as
the candle burns?

What ingredients make up the scent? Did the manufacturer use quality
perfumes? Are they natural scents or synthetic?
These are questions that you may want to ask before you purchase your
next candle.

Wicks:

Look for a wick made from 100% cotton and avoid any with lead or other
metals. If you can, find out from the candle manufacturer what the wick is
made of.

Waxes:

Many candle companies are making candles with natural plant-based waxes
including soy and beeswax. These candles burn ‘cleaner’ than traditional
candles made with paraffin.

You will notice with nautral wax candles that the container you burn these
candles in will not be lined with a black film after burning. In the long run,
you will notice that your walls are cleaner too. If you burn candles a lot, and
they haven’t been natural wax candles, you may have noticed that when
you took a picture off the wall that there was an area under the spot where
the picture was removed that was cleaner than the surrounding wall. Yes,
the black on the walls in the other areas, could have been caused by
traditionally made candles.

Also consider that you and your family may have been breathing in some
unhealthy particles too!

Burn-Time:

There are many factors which affect how long a candle will burn once it is lit
but in general all other factors being equal, the natural wax candles will burn
longer than traditional paraffin candles.

The length of the wick is very important for candle safety and is a big factor
in how long a candle burns.
With natural-wax candles the wick should be trimmed to 1/4″ before it is lit.
This will ensure an even burning and a longer lasting candle.

Avoid burning a candle in a draft to make it last longer and also do not burn
it under a ceiling fan.

In summary, scented candles help set a mood for fun and romance and can add warmth and coziness to a room.

Enjoy the candles you choose and burn them in good health!

I hope this article will help you make an informed decision and buy from a reputable candle maker the next time you are in the market for a candle to pamper your senses or those of a friend.

Is Vanilla Your Favorite Candle Scent?

By: Kara Kelso

Out of all the millions of people who love candles, a huge percent lean towards vanilla as their favorite candle scent. Before you buy, here’s information you should know.

There’s many reason why this could be. Maybe it’s because vanilla was one of the first scents ever created for candles. Maybe it’s a familiar baking scent. Or maybe it’s just so basic it appeals to just about everyone.

Regardless of WHY people like vanilla, it’s clear there is no shortage in finding vanilla and vanilla related scents in candles.

When you visit any candle site, one of the first things you see is probably vanilla. There are literally thousands of different types, ranging from “strong vanilla” type scents to just hints of vanilla in the description. It’s used as a base for many unique scents like some less popular “Cinderella” or “Caribbean Morning”. (If you’ve never heard of these scents, you aren’t alone!)

With all the choices of vanilla scents out there, how can you decide which is going to be the best? Since vanilla is vanilla no matter what it’s in, here are some tips for choosing the best kind of candle to buy in vanilla scents:

- Choose Soy Wax Candles
Everyone who burns a soy candle has never gone back to paraffin. Soy burns cleaner, and often times has a better scent throw. You’ll also get a longer burn time, so the value is better

- Watch for Different Names
Sometimes it’s not called just “Vanilla”. At Prairie Soy Candles, the true vanilla scent is called “Vanilla Silk”. This is just a fancy name for the vanilla scent you already know.

- Check out Suggestions
Some sites offer suggestions on how to use certain scents. Some work better in a jar, while others are best in melts (often called “tarts”). Read suggestions carefully to get the most out of your candle!

- Use Melt Warmers
Regardless of the scent, you are going to have the best scent “throw” in a melt warmer. Buy electric if possible, and use with wax melts. Melt warmers are especially important in larger rooms to get the maximum scent throw.

Do be sure to view all scent descriptions as well, because you never know when your favorite vanilla scent is going to blend into a new favorite scent!
